I already love it and haven't even worked one day with the kids. We've been organizing for days and I'm just so excited. We have truly made the classroom our own.
It was a huge project cleaning and organizing. They were still renovating while we where getting set up. As if setting up a classroom isn't crazy enough. We were confined to the storage room for 2 days and just at the end of last week were able to start setting up the actual classroom. This entailed moving everything back to where we wanted it interspersed with a major cleaning operations. The class room is gorgeous, it's freshly painted with several new gates. But this meant that there was a film of dust on everything, as well as things being thrown into the middle of each room to be out of the way. It took a full day just to get the now empty furniture into their proper places, now the putting things away is yet to come. It is nice in a weird way, because the classroom will truly be ours. We are not inheriting someone elses process, but making our own. I am new this year along with both teachers. So this should be interesting.
I'm surprised at myself actually. Both teachers are Israeli so they slip into talking Hebrew quite often. It's been years since I've had a full conversation with anyone in Hebrew, besides the standard "Do you speak Hebrew?" or "Where are you from?".I'm remembering so much more than I thought I would. It's especially helpful when they are trying to find a word in English and say the Hebrew equivalent first. They will have to be careful though because I will sooner rather than later be in on all their side conversations.
I love being able to bring all my skills, including my graphic design training, to work. I designed an stencil for myself of Hebrew letters. I made them backwards intentionally so when I cut them out I can hide the ugly black line by sticking that to the wall. I also mocked up a flower stencil, they are all perfect for printing and I can quickly print any banner I want in any color. I hope to find a script font I can do the same thing to, but that will come later. For now I wanted to make these public so they can be used by any Hebrew school teacher.
Unfortunately I was not able to upload all the letters at the size I have made them in this one post. So instead of making 27 different posts I put them up on google docs. Here's the link to the Hebrew Alphabet stencils: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B-Dv1ZEYXbtdNGFkMWZlOTYtMzkzMS00ODYzLTllZmYtYzVlMzQ5YjI5MmRm&hl=en

Compartmentalized

Maybe I'm spoiled, but i'm a whole person. Our trip started with a visit to Kibbutz Ein Harod, which houses the first art museum in Israel. While there, we saw three main exhibits. The first, was an exhibit of Judaica that the Kibbutz has been collecting since before World War II, and which artists to this day still contribute. The second was a collection of large abstract pieces that you should check out the next time you're in Israel. Third, we saw an exhibit of three young artists just out of Betzal'el art school that was great.

After a packed lunch eaten outside on a grassy field, we re-loaded the buses and kept pushing North to Tsfat.

While there, we met artist David Friedman, who paints Kabbalistic themed pieces. We sat with him for an hour as he explained many of his paintings.

This was followed by an hour of free time to wander through Tsfat's old city. It was getting late, so we drove to Tiberius for dinner on the boardwalk on the Kinneret. From there, we went to Kibbutz Haon; they have guesthouses overlooking the Kinneret where we stayed for the night.

Tsfat Old City

The next morning, we headed out bright and early to the Kinneret cemetery, where many heroes of early Israel are buried. As we moved around between a few select graves, Dr. Avi told amazing stories, without which our country wouldn't be the same today. Among the most interesting were poet Rachel's grave, where we sang one of her songs, and Naomi Shemer's grave.

The grave of Rachel, a well-known poet who once lived in that early kibbutz. Stones left on the grave are a sign of respect. The small black object to the left (with a bench for sitting) is a container for a book of her poetry (in Hebrew, of course!) to be read at the site and then replaced. The book is periodically replaced as it gets worn out. Mel Reisfield, a Hebrew teacher on Year Course and long time Judaean, delivered an inspiring speech about his childhood, teen-aged years and early involvement in the Young Judaea Youth Movement. He described how he and his friends rallied, paraded, and fought for the freedom of many different types of Jewry at the time. His Zionist-filled lecture was fun, amusing, inspirational and emotional, leaving us all with a strong sense of pride and love for Jews and the land of Israel!

This week classes started in Jerusalem and we've been having a lot of fun learning about Israel, but perhaps the most fun of all is Zionism and the Arts. On Tuesday, Dr. Avi Rose took us on our first siyur (field trip) to the Museum of Italian Jewish Heritage and the Israel Museum to teach us about the origins of Zionism through artwork.

At the Italian museum we got to see an intricate Rococo style ark and ornate torah dressings. Avi taught us about the small Jewish community in Italy and all their experiences after World War One. The museum held all sorts of interesting artifacts from prayer shawls to menorahs.

When we'd seen all we could we hopped back on the bus and went to the Israel Museum. We spent and hour huddled around Avi and the model of ancient Jerusalem learning all about the architecture and the Old City.

Zionism and the Arts is an incredible class. Being able to travel each week to see the things we study is invaluable. I can't wait to see what the next siyur will be.

Israel Update is an opportunity for Section 3, every Monday, to sit and chat with one of the staff members about the current events going on in Israel over lunch. This week, the focus was on the shooting at the Merkaz HaRav yeshiva and the aftermath of such a horrible tragedy. In addition, we spoke with Gabi about John McCain's plans to visit Israel, and Sheldon Shulman, teacher of the Arab-Israeli Conflict class, explained to us how it is in fact quite common for presidential candidates to tour foreign nations before Election Day. The update ended with a chat about bureaucracy in Israel, and comparing it to the United States and Great Britain.

Moved to Jerusalem for 3 months of studying

I'm close to the Biblical Zoo, which is near the southwestern Jerusalem neighbourhood of Manahat (formerly Malkha). Typically Israeli, it is an intersting, yet controversial movie about the relationships between young Israeli and Palestinians in the current climate.

Last week was a Campus Activism and Aliyah Seminar. For these two days, we were given a choice to choose from one of two options. Those going on to university or college next year took part in various workshops and speakers that addressed the issue of being Jewish on campus. For those considering making Aliyah there was a more practical seminar highlighting the main issues and challenges to expect.

Designed for chanichim seriously considering making Aliyah in the next 1-3 years, there was little time spent on feel-good Zionistic fluff, instead chanichim got the hard facts about the process of Aliyah.

We started Sunday night by having a talk about the rights of a new oleh (immigrant) to Israel. Did you know that all Olim under 30 receive three years of university tuition?!?! That's enough for a degree! Olim also receive tax breaks, five free months of Ulpan with stipend money, extra money to ease move, and more- and the flight to Israel is free with extra allowed for baggage! The following morning we were visited by the staff of Merkaz HaMagshimim, an absorption center and community center for English speakers supported by Hadassah. This was then followed by a talk about serving inthe Israeli army.

After lunch, we took a bus to Herzeliyah and used the transit to absorb the rapid information from the morning and to discuss the biblical history of Aliyah as well as the Interdisciplinary Center, or IDC, a college of social sciences with an international school growing in prestige. While this is a private institution and the tuition for Olim isn't completely covered by Israel's government, it's much cheaper than American universities and offers the benefits of a smaller student body, the chance to meet and learn with people from around the world, and get practical experience which would look great on any resume. We met some former Year Coursers who chose IDC after trying universities back in America and England and wanted to finish their degrees in Israel. The IDC isn't for everyone, but many of us left happy to know that there was a great option for university here in Israel.

We returned to Bat-Yam where we learned about the organizations that could help smooth the process of moving to Israel, Nefesh B'Nefesh and Garin Tzabar. Nefesh B'Nefesh helps cut through the bureaucratic difficulties which make Aliyah so intimidating, and Garin Tzabar provides a supportive environment during army service. We finished the day with a talk with a girl currently serving in the IDF through Garin Tzabar. It was a really long day, filled with lots of information and options, which helped those who already had set plans for Aliyah understand their rights and what to expect, and those who hadn't yet made their plans concrete learned about the options that can make the process easier. I'm sure that over the next five years or so, most of our small group will have moved to Israel, proud to be fulfilling our dream of making Aliyah.

In addition to volunteering, studying, being serious....

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; They are now saving one child's heart every 28 hours. The colony's main street Ben Gurion Boulevard boasts houses built of stone with red-shingled roofs. From here you can look up the mountain and see a unique view of the new Bahai terraced Gardens.

There is great transportation to get around. I pass the Bahai Garden daily. I'm always at Mt. Carmel where there is an Internet cafe. Haifa is located between the green Carmel Mountains and the blue coastal plain and beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean Sea. Boasting a bustling seaport, airport, and rail line, Haifa serves as a national transportation center, a focus for commerce, tourism, and industry, and an international name in high tech. It is likewise a regional center for government offices, courts, hospitals, and cultural institutions, and home to a variety of institutions of higher education and professional training centers. It was awsome! Maccabi Haifa won 2 to 1 and all the goals were scored right in front of our seats. I can't wait to attend another game. People really get into it here. Its not like the baseball games at home since you sit almost on the field. There are no big TV screens to watch on or see instant replays - if you miss it, that's it! Still, I'll never be able to enjoy watching it on TV again. We are in the midst of Hol Hamoed Succot, coming up to Simchat Torah and as I mentioned last week, for most of our chanichim, this is their opportunity to experience the unique feeling, only in Israel of the chagim. It was a new experience for many to see that on almost every balcony and every small building garden a succa was put up. It can almost be compared to Christmas lights abroad. Some chanichim were invited to their building succa for a meal, some went to their local Succot festivals, selling decorations and "arba'at haminim"- lulav, etrog, myrtle and willow. It is a tradition every year for Year Coursers to go up to Tzfat for Simchat Torah and spend this exciting holiday with a welcoming communiand see a different way of celebrating."

Call Me Toll Free!!!

This is my International Toll-Free number, that allows family members and friends overseas to dial my mobile phone in Israel is 1-866-717-0250 PIN number 029187#

Here's my phone number in Israel
011 972 52 602 9187

You can go here to see what time it is now in Haifa http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/personal.html

Yom Kippur in Petach Tikva

I had a great Yom Tov. I'm working with severely physically disabled kids. I kind of feel out of place because I know so little Hebrew, but I'm starting to pick up words. I wish I had room to stick my younger brother and sister into my luggage also, not to mention my cat and one of our dogs...

I have a good bye book that I've been having people sign. Today I saw Michael, one of my best friends from high school and beyond. His mother and grandmother love me and don't understand how I can go so far away for so long. I had Michael sign my book and I have to go over to his house to say goodbye to his mom and grandmom.

My brother Stu started "college" at San Francisco State College of Extended Learning on Monday. My sister Tov started 8th grade at Albany Middle School on Wednesday. I live right between the high school and middle school and its weird to drive by them. I keep thinking I should be in school myself.

I don't have too many reservations about going to Israel, I've been trying to get there for so many years. This year, graduating, working, completing my high school education and experiences, has been all consuming. It has been easy to keep so busy and too distracted to feel other than excitement and anticipation. Certainly I'm sad to leave my familiar surroundings, the friends I've made, the routine I've become accustomed to, the roots I've worked on planting. I am used to things changing fairly often in our family living situation for various reasons. I was just talking with my mom about how this is the longest we've lived in one house since we moved to California 10 years ago - 4 years. My mother promised my youngest sister that she wouldn't move out of Albany until she graduates high school in 5 years. I wonder if she'll stay put in the same house, the one we consider home.

My brother is sad that he can't participate in the high school theater ensemble. Its a student run organization after school that most of his friends participate in. Since he's taking a full time course this semester at SFSU instead of attending 11th grade, its against the rules. I'm very proud of him. He's the youngest student ever taking this Digital Video Intensive. He's so awesome - I don't want to think of how much I'll miss him. He was gone for a month on a teen trip to Israel in July, but I was busy working and it went by so fast. We've gotten really close this year and I've tried to spend as much time with him as possible.

I'll miss my sister also. We've been sharing a room for the past couple of years. She is sooo funny and amazing for 13 years old. I'm already missing her changes...

I'm not going to miss my mom...NOT!!! We both agree we are looking forward to having space away from each other, but she's admitted to not wanting me to go at the same time it was her idea I choose this program over others. She's had a really hard time this year with everything going on with us kids, but I know she's going to pull through as soon as I step foot on the plane!

I'm flying down to LA by myself to meet with the group to fly to Israel. I've flown by myself to LA before, and to Seattle, and to Florida. I flew to Australia with a group after 6th grade. So I have no fears about getting myself around the airport. As a family we went to Florida almost every year and to New York.

I spoke at my meeting Monday night. I spent 2 hours talking with Jeremy and his sister last night after the meeting. Out goes the special green rolling bag my Grandma Corinne sent from Florida and the large black rolling bag my mom bought in a tourist shop on the waterfront when we were spending quality time together in San Francisco. Both have dimensions too large for the restrictions. Ugh!!

I'm so glad I didn't wait to the last minute to pack. I've spent the last month organizing my things, purchasing items, deciding what I can bring and could lose, what I can't live without, what I don't care about, what I'm giving away. It's emotional, exciting and exhausting.

Here's the official limitations:
two pieces of checked luggage. The permitted total dimensions of the two pieces of luggage are 107 inches, with no one bag exceeding 62 inches. This total is calculated by adding the length, width and height of each bag. Thus, if one bag measures 62 total inches, the other cannot exceed 45 inches. The weight per bag is limited to 50 lbs.

Instead I'm taking the red rolling bag Grandma bought for my brother to take to Israel for 1 month in July and a rolling bag with organized compartments mom had in the garage.

Here's my inventory:
Red Roller
13
14
28

55

Compartment Roller
15
14
30

59

outer tops:
1 Eyor fleece pullover
1 fleece
1 short sleeve Blue sweater
1 long sleeve pullover
1 blue/grey fleece zipper jacket
1 black rain jacket
1 white jean jacket
2 sweat shirts
1 shrug
1 browh jacket

Bath:
1 yellow towel

Pants:
3 jeans
1 grey sweats
1 green sweats
2 black sweats

Dress up:
4 peasant skirts
1 plaid short skirt
1 jean long skirt
1 black short skirt
1 black short jacket
1 blue short skirt
1 blue short jacket
2 pairs black dress pants
1 blue peasant skirt

Underwear:
1 black underwear
3 short under
2 thermal tops
5 bras
12 panties

Other tops:
10 tank tops
14 tshirt
8 dress shirt
1 long tshirt

Bathing:
1 white skirt
2 bathing tops
3 bathing bottoms

Other:
17 pr socks
1 pr white shoes
1 black warm scarf

104 total inches
